From April 12–16, the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) joined affiliates from across the country in Bloomington for the Epilepsy Foundation of America’s 2026 Leadership Conference. Held every two years, this national epilepsy conference brings together staff, volunteers, partners, and leaders to strengthen connections, share insights, and advance the work of supporting people affected by epilepsy.
This year’s theme, The Power of Us, emphasized how progress in epilepsy care, advocacy, and research is driven by collaboration and shared purpose.
EFMN was proud to serve as the host site and to be strongly represented throughout the week. Staff and board members contributed to conversations on epilepsy advocacy, public health, communications, and partnerships—bringing Minnesota perspectives into a broader national dialogue.
Read on for highlights from the conference.
The Power of Collaboration and Advocacy
EFMN Executive Director Jenna Carter and Board President Erica Holzer opened the conference by welcoming attendees and reflecting on how The Power of Us comes to life through collaboration across Minnesota.

From major advocacy wins to ongoing partnerships with health care providers and community organizations, they highlighted how these collective efforts are improving epilepsy care and helping ensure no one faces epilepsy alone.
Advocacy remained a central theme throughout the conference. Attendees also heard from Minnesota State Senator Jim Abeler and received a message from U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, both emphasizing the importance of sustained epilepsy advocacy and public policy.
The Power of Public Health
Public health discussions were a key part of the conference agenda. A session featuring Angela Bowles Edwards, EFMN Director of Health Equity and EFMN Board Member Kinshuk Sahaya, focused on the importance of equity-informed approaches in programming and service delivery. The session also featured SBH Foundation’s Ylvisakers’ family as they shared their story and journey of life with epilepsy.

The Power of Partnerships

Another session led by EFMN Board Member Michael Marcotte, explored media, collaboration, and partnerships. The discussion focused on how strategic partnerships can strengthen public understanding of epilepsy and expand organizational reach.
The Power of Community
The conference also featured a powerful keynote from Stacia Kalinoski, along with a hands-on service project supporting impactful Minnesota organizations like Can Do Canines and the SBH Foundation.

The Power of Us
From inspiring sessions to meaningful connections, the week was a strong reminder of what’s possible with the power of us. We’re excited to carry the insights gained to improve our work in supporting people impacted by epilepsy across our state.
